'Evil spirits responsible for earthquake'

Posted 19 January 2010

A minister in Northern Ireland has blamed Voodoo for the earthquake catastrophe that has hit Haiti.

Although the majority of Haitians are Christians, it is believed that as many as half of the population practice Voodoo. According to one Haitian, however, ‘everybody is 100 per cent Voodoo’.1

During his sermon at Newbuildings Independent Methodist Church on Sunday, the Rev Jonathan Campbell told his congregation that Voodoo was a ‘dangerous and destructive religion, involving the worship of evil spirits’.2

Campbell denied saying that the Haitians had deserved their fate, but added that ‘my personal conviction is that the evil spirits are responsible for the earthquake and the deaths of thousands that have resulted from it’.

However, there are more signs that people are turning to Christianity in the wake of the disaster. ‘A lot of people who never prayed or believed – now they believe,’ said Cristina Bailey, a 24 year-old bank clerk.3

Campbell had earlier made headlines in the UK when he tried to ban Hallowe’en in 2009 because it was ‘one of the two major days for Satanists’.4
