The Meaning of Witchcraft

Gerald Gardner is often considered to be the 'father' of Wicca, but whilst Wicca is one of the fastest growing religions today, Gardner's own writings remain largely neglected. There is a reason for this. Rambling and historically inaccurate, Gardner's works cannot be read as serious studies of witchcraft. However, for the insight they provide into Gardner's vision of witchcraft they are indispensable to the student of Wicca.

The Gospel of the Witches

Charles G. Leland claimed his book Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches was a record of the legends, spells and rituals of La Vecchia Religione, the 'Old Religion', as told to him by the witch Maddalena. Undoubtedly a fabrication by Leland, this was one of the key texts used by Gerald Gardner in the creation of the Wiccan religion and many of the rituals used by today's Witches contain poetry derived from this book. Yet it remains largely unknown and unread. Contains the original Italian text with English translations. Leland himself adds fascinating if bogus chapters on the supposed discovery and meaning of this 'ancient lore'.

The Burning of Bridget Cleary

Angela Bourke's The Burning of Bridget Cleary is a fascinating re-telling of one of the most gruesome atrocities committed against an accused Witch. Bourke tells the story of how Bridget, a housewife in a small village in rural Ireland at the turn of the Nineteenth Century, was murdered by her husband, Michael Cleary, because he believed that she was a Fairy Witch. Bourke also examines the wider significances of the tragedy in a thoroughly researched and well presented book that should be read by anyone with an interest in the history of Witchcraft and in the folklore of Faerie.
